5.1 surround mixing distributes sound across six channels: front left, front center, front right, rear left, rear right, and a low-frequency effects (LFE) channel. Being the most accessible immersive audio format due to it's lower barrier of entry for consumers, 5.1 mixes are essential for narrative projects - both feature length and short films - as well as commercial projects that are broadcasted in theatrical settings or on streaming services.

Despite the many impressive immersive audio formats available to us today, most of the audio consumed on both the internet and television are still only utilizing the standard two channel format known as stereo.
